This working group was established in 1999 to examine various aspects of remote sensing in optically-complex (Case 2) waters. The group held a 5 day workshop, hosted by Dr. Peter Schlittenhardt and colleagues, at the Joint Research Center (JRC) in Ispra, Italy (14-18 June, 1999).
It was recognized that standard algorithms in use for chlorophyll retrieval from satellite data only work well in relatively simple Case 1 waters. The prospects of better algorithms for Case 2 waters have improved vastly with the advent of the new generation of ocean-colour sensors, which have superior spectral and radiometric resolution. The working group prepared a comprehensive report providing an overview of the algorithms and approaches that are being developed for deriving geophysical products from Case 2 waters, and also evaluated the limitations that exist and identified promising avenues for further improvements. In addition, the report summarizes sensor requirements as well as potential applications of ocean-colour data in Case 2 waters. The report entitled Remote Sensing of Ocean Colour in Coastal, and Other Optically-Complex, Waters, was edited by Dr. Shubha Sathyendranath.
